A major 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Iranian town of Sarvan, about 50 km from the border with Pakistan and tremors were felt as far as India and the Gulf states. The earthquake hit on 16th April, 2013 at 10:44 GMT at a depth of 15.2 km.

At least 34 people were killed and 80 injured in the Panjgur and Mashkeel areas of Balochistan, while 50 people sustained injuries in Karachi in incidents of roof collapses. At least 1,000 houses and three dozen shops have collapsed in Mashkheel area. District officials and hospital staff said scores of people had been injured, most of whom were injured as mud walls collapsed or in panic when people rushed from their homes.

Muslim Charity’s Emergency Response Team has been deployed in the area for the first rapid assessment. In his statement from the ground, Sabooh Uddin, CEO of Muslim Chariy ensured, “We will try our best to assist the population in these far flung areas of Pakistan. I am sad and offer my condolences to Baloch brothers and sisters who lost their dear and near ones”.

Muslim Charity has a vast network of volunteers in improvised areas of Balochistan to assist the communities by digging water wells and providing essential facilities and amenities to schools.
