Bangladesh
UNAIDS estimates there are around 140,000 sex workers in Bangladesh, across 20 brothel-villages. The largest is Daulatdia, the fourth largest brothel in the world, where over 2,000 sex workers and 800 children live. Each day, around 3,000 men pass through this sprawling slum of makeshift shelters, leaving women and children at constant risk of grooming, abuse and violence.
The situation is dire: thousands of girls under 18 are caught in prostitution, some as young as 10. In Daulatdia, the average age of new sex workers is just 14. Childhood here is stolen long before it begins.
Muslim Charity, through its partners, works to rescue children from these harmful environments and bring them into centres where they are cared for, educated and protected. They are taught their rights, given safe spaces to play and offered the hope of reintegration into society. These centres are also a crucial entry point for mothers – providing them with respite, counselling and vocational training so that they too can take steps towards freedom.
Our Restoring Dignity Project in Daulatdia focuses on safe housing, skills training, land ownership and livelihood opportunities for women, helping them escape exploitation and secure a future of independence. By working with both children and mothers, we are tackling exploitation at its roots and ensuring no family is left without hope.
Our work is urgent and vital and we will not stop until children and women everywhere are free from the chains of modern slavery.
