Slavery

50 million people are living in modern slavery

We may think of slavery as a thing of the past, but in reality, across the world today, there are millions of men, women and children who live without freedom, trapped in slavery and exploitation. In countries like Pakistan, Nigeria, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya, poverty and inequality leave families exposed to systems and people who promise a better future, but instead lead them into lives of hardship and abuse.

Parents who simply want food on the table and education for their children can find themselves tricked into handing over what little they have left, including their bodies, their freedom and even their own children, in the hope of escaping poverty.

The scale is staggering. Recent global estimates show that around 50 million people are living in modern slavery, including forced labour. In Africa, prevalence is among the highest, with rates in some countries reaching up to eight people for every 1,000.

In Nigeria, around 1.6 million people are thought to be living in modern slavery. Uganda carries an estimated 250,000 people, and in Tanzania the figure is over 300,000. Kenya also faces a serious challenge, with almost 270,000 men, women and children believed to be trapped. In Pakistan, bonded labour in agriculture, brick making and other industries remains widespread, with estimates placing more than 3 million people in modern slavery.

Behind each of these numbers is a human story. Children removed from school and forced into harsh, dangerous work. Women and girls deceived with promises of jobs or marriage, only to be exploited and abused. Survivors carrying scars that are physical, mental and emotional, from experiences that no one should ever face. Without urgent action, these hidden lives remain trapped in despair, desperation and danger.

Muslim Charity
Intervention

At Muslim Charity, we refuse to accept that these horrors are someone else’s problem. Freedom, dignity and hope are not privileges. They are rights. That is why we are working with partners across Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nigeria, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya to protect the vulnerable, rescue the exploited and prevent others from ever falling into slavery.

Our faith teaches us that freeing a slave is great and noble act. Those trapped in slavery are eligible to receive Zakat, reminding us that they are among the most vulnerable and deserving of people. We work in the heart of communities, directly with families and local leaders educating about the devastating reality of modern slavery and the dangerous impacts of trafficking.

By raising awareness of the false promises traffickers make and the risks of unsafe migration, we give people the knowledge and power to protect themselves. For those already trapped, we are providing a way out. We help break cycles of bonded labour and support survivors in building a new life, full of dignity, hope, independence and promise.

We also know that prevention must be long-term. In Pakistan, where bonded labour still affects millions, we support families with alternatives, helping them to establish small businesses so they are not forced into exploitative work. In East Africa, where hundreds of thousands are vulnerable because of poverty and lack of opportunity, we invest in livelihoods that break the very cycle traffickers prey upon.

United Against Slavery is more than a campaign. It is a promise and a call to action with a reminder that no matter how invisible someone has become, or how deep their suffering, we will stand with them. With your support, Muslim Charity can bring freedom and dignity to people whose voices are too often silenced. Together, we can break the chains of slavery and build a future where every person has the right to live free. We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the UN’s International Organization of Migration (IOM) making a firm commitment of $1,000,000 to bring about long term change for those trapped in modern slavery and human trafficking. As part of IOM’s Islamic Philanthropy Fund, we invite other organisations to work with us on this vital work.

Muslim Charity attended the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) in 2025 in New York to support global efforts to end modern slavery. Represented by our Chairman and senior leadership, we joined international experts and the UN Migration Agency (IOM) to highlight the urgent need to protect vulnerable people from exploitation.

Through our partnership with IOM, we continue to support initiatives that raise awareness, strengthen protection systems and offer safer pathways for those at risk of trafficking and modern slavery.
