IOM and Muslim Charity Partner to Rehabilitate Critical Education and Health Facilities in Afghanistan
$

Kabul, 3 December 2025 – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Muslim Charity have launched a new partnership to expand access to essential community services for returnees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and vulnerable host communities across Afghanistan. Through a contribution of USD 250,000, Muslim Charity will support the construction and rehabilitation of critical education and health facilities identified through IOM’s Community Action Plans (CAPs).

Afghanistan continues to face prolonged humanitarian and economic challenges driven by decades of conflict, recurrent natural hazards, and widespread displacement, and large-scale returns from neighbouring countries. In 2025 alone, more than 2,1 million Afghans returned from Iran and Pakistan, adding further pressure to already fragile community systems. Millions of these returnees and IDPs are struggling to access basic services. This new collaboration aims to enhance resilience, support reintegration, and help communities move toward durable, locally driven solutions.

“This partnership with Muslim Charity reflects our shared commitment to supporting Afghan families as they rebuild their lives through sustainable and inclusive solutions,” said Mihyung Park, IOM Chief of Mission in Afghanistan. “We are excited about this new collaboration, which will improve access to basic services and strengthen the long-term resilience and stability of displacement-affected communities.”

The project will focus on improving or rehabilitating community-prioritized facilities such as schools and health centres, expanding access to essential services for thousands of people. In addition to addressing immediate infrastructure needs, the intervention will create short-term employment opportunities for local workers and reinforce community ownership through the establishment and training of maintenance committees.

“At Muslim Charity, we remain committed to supporting communities in Afghanistan as they rebuild their futures with dignity, hope and opportunity. This partnership with IOM reflects our shared belief that people must be at the centre of their own recovery. By restoring essential services — schools, health centres and community spaces — we are helping create environments where children can learn, families can thrive and vulnerable groups can once again access the support they deserve. We are honoured to work alongside IOM to strengthen resilience, expand life-saving services and contribute to lasting, community-driven development across Afghanistan," said Irfan Rajput, Director of Programmes and Policy, Muslim Charity Helping the Needy, UK.

The partnership builds on IOM’s long-standing presence in Afghanistan and Muslim Charity – a UK-based humanitarian organisation active in over 20 countries – showing both the organizations’ dedication to humanitarian action and community development. Leveraging IOM’s locally led Community Action Plans (CAPs), which help communities prioritise needs, strengthen ownership, and guide sustainable investments, the collaboration is enhancing resilience, improving access to education and health services, and supporting broader efforts to promote social cohesion, protect vulnerable populations, and strengthen community systems against future shocks.

This initiative represents an important step in mobilizing resources and expertise to support vulnerable populations across Afghanistan. Building on these efforts, IOM will continue to engage charitable institutions, local organizations and individual donors to expand the reach, sustainability and long-term impact of its community-focused programmes.
