KAFFARAH
FOR MISSED FASTS

If a person deliberately breaks a fast during Ramadan without a valid Islamic reason, they are required to make Kaffarah as an act of repentance.

Kaffarah is fulfilled in one of the following ways:

  • Fasting for 60 consecutive days, or
  • If unable to do so, feeding 60 poor people, each with two meals for one day

This ruling applies when a fast is intentionally invalidated.

Kaffarah is calculated according to the average cost of providing two meals per person.

KAFFARAH FOR BREAKING
AN OATH

Kaffarah is also required for breaking a sworn oath or promise.

To redeem a broken oath, a person must:

  • Seek forgiveness from Allah, and
  • Feed 10 people a cooked meal (or its equivalent cost at the rate of a cost of a meal in e.g. UK/USA)

FAQs

Kaffarah is a required expiation (atonement) when someone deliberately breaks a Ramadan fast without a valid Islamic reason. It is fulfilled by fasting 60 consecutive days, or - if the person is unable to do so - by feeding 60 poor people.

Kaffarah for one intentionally broken fast is £300. This is based on feeding 60 poor people for that one day (often costed as £5 per person). If more than one fast was deliberately broken, multiply £300 × number of fasts.

Intentionally breaking a Ramadan fast without a valid excuse is a serious matter and requires sincere repentance. In commonly followed Hanafi guidance in the UK, deliberately breaking the fast (including by eating) requires qadā (making up of that missed fast) and Kaffarah; Kaffarah is fulfilled by fasting 60 days consecutively (with feeding 60 poor people as an option when unable). Because schools of law differ on details in some scenarios, consult your local Imam or qualified scholar if you’re unsure.

On our website, select “Kaffarah per missed fast – £300” (for one intentionally broken fast) and donate online. Kaffarah is delivered through feeding those in need, in line with the requirement to feed 60 people if the 60-day fast cannot be completed.

If you need to spread the cost, you can make multiple donations that add up to the full kaffarah amount e.g. by setting up a monthly donation. From a timing perspective, it’s best to complete it as soon as you are able.

Kaffarah can be paid at any time after the intentionally broken Ramadan fast. However, it’s generally better not to delay so your obligation is fulfilled and the food reaches people in need sooner.

At Muslim Charity, feeding 60 poor people for one day (the standard Kaffarah for one deliberately broken fast) is £300.

For each Ramadan fast deliberately broken without a valid excuse, kaffarah is either: (1) fast 60 consecutive days, or (2) if unable, feed 60 poor people. If paying via Muslim Charity’s feeding route, calculate £300 × number of intentionally broken fasts. This is separate from qadā, meaning you must also make up the missed day(s) of fasting.
